How Much Does a Navien Tankless Water Heater Cost?

How Much Does a Navien Tankless Water Heater Cost

A Navien tankless gas water heater costs $1,075 to $1,535 for the unit alone, per Fixr's brand pricing table, updated January 31, 2025. That range spans both the NPE-A2 and NPE-S2 condensing series. Every gas model Navien sells is also Energy Star certified, per the same source.

Hot Water Brief is an independent cost-research site. We are not a contractor and do not perform the work ourselves.

That $1,075 to $1,535 figure is equipment only, not what ends up on an installed quote. Fixr's published range does not split by series or model size, so a smaller NPE-150S2 and the flagship NPE-240A2 are both quoted inside the same brand-wide range. For the full installed total, including venting, gas line work and labor, see the Navien installation cost guide, which breaks that number down line by line.

How Does Navien Pricing Compare to Rheem Rinnai and Bradford White

Navien's $1,075 to $1,535 gas unit price sits above Rheem's $670 to $1,950 low end and below the top of Rinnai's $900 to $1,995, with Bradford White priced at $1,000 to $1,500, all per Fixr's brand comparison table, updated January 31, 2025. Every figure here is equipment only.

That equipment gap is a few hundred dollars at most between brands, and it is rarely what decides an installed bid. Venting length, gas line sizing and permit fees apply the same regardless of which nameplate is on the unit, so two quotes with a wide gap in total price are usually not pricing the equipment difference. Compare installed quotes on labor and venting scope, not on brand alone.

Does the Npe A2 or Npe S2 Series Cost More

No dated source splits Navien's $1,075 to $1,535 unit price by series. What is published is the spec gap: the NPE-A2 series, three models, tops out at 0.95 UEF with built-in ComfortFlow recirculation, while the NPE-S2 series, four models, reaches 0.96 UEF without it, per Navien's residential tankless page.

The NPE-A2 lineup covers the NPE-180A2, NPE-210A2 and NPE-240A2, each with ComfortFlow built in, a combined buffer tank, pump and controls meant to shorten the wait for hot water at the tap. The NPE-S2 lineup adds a fourth, smaller model, the NPE-150S2, alongside the NPE-180S2, NPE-210S2 and NPE-240S2.

Navien's own residential page states the S2 series delivers 'more output, lower installation costs and lower operating costs' than the A2 series, despite its marginally higher UEF, since it does not carry the built-in recirculation hardware. That claim is aimed at a buyer who does not need whole-house recirculation built in.

What Do You Get at Each Navien Price Tier

Below the A2 and S2 condensing tiers, Navien also sells non-condensing NHW and NPN series, which clear the federal minimum of 0.80 to 0.81 UEF but use metal concentric venting instead of PVC, per Navien's residential page and 10 CFR 430.32(d). The condensing tiers add PVC or polypropylene venting and a higher UEF at a higher unit price.

Venting material is the practical difference most buyers notice first. Metal concentric venting on the non-condensing NHW and NPN units costs more to run than PVC, since PVC pipe is cheaper and easier to route, which is one reason condensing models often price out closer on total installed cost despite a higher unit price. The recirculation question is separate: ComfortFlow on the NPE-A2 series is built in, while the NPE-S2 series and the non-condensing lines need an external recirculation setup if one is wanted, an add-on not included in Fixr's $1,075 to $1,535 unit figure.

What Warranty Comes with a Navien Tankless Water Heater

In a single family home with standard or controlled recirculation, Navien's NPE-A series carries 15 years on the heat exchanger, 5 years on parts and 1 year on labor, per Navien's NPE warranty page. An uncontrolled, continuously running recirculation pump cuts heat exchanger coverage to 5 years.

That distinction, whether the pump runs on a control or continuously, is decided on install day and is worth ten years of heat exchanger coverage. Navien also voids the warranty on a unit bought online or through a distributor it has not authorized, per the same page.

Why Does the Installed Price Run Higher Than the Unit Price

Because venting, gas line work and labor, not the equipment, drive most of an installed quote. The general gas tankless installed range is $3,293 to $3,859, per Homewyse, dated May 2026, well above Navien's $1,075 to $1,535 unit price, though that figure is not Navien-specific.

That gap holds across brands, not just Navien. A condensing unit adds a condensate line and, in some jurisdictions, a neutralizer, since Navien's condensate runs acidic at pH 3 to 5, per Navien's condensing technology page. That is code-compliant scope, not padding. For the full line-item breakdown of what turns a Navien unit price into an installed total, see the Navien installation cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Navien tankless water heater cost before installation?

$1,075 to $1,535 for the gas unit itself, per Fixr's brand pricing table, updated January 31, 2025. That range is not split by series or model size, so it covers everything from the entry NPE-150S2 to the flagship NPE-240A2. See [the installation cost guide](/guides/cost-install-navien-tankless-water-heater/) for installed totals.

Is the NPE-A2 or NPE-S2 series more expensive?

No dated source breaks Navien's price out by series. Navien's own residential page states the NPE-S2 series delivers more output, lower installation costs and lower operating costs than the NPE-A2 series, since the NPE-S2 does not carry the built-in ComfortFlow recirculation hardware.

How does Navien pricing compare to Rheem, Rinnai and Bradford White?

Navien's $1,075 to $1,535 gas unit price sits above Rheem's $670 to $1,950 low end, below the top of Rinnai's $900 to $1,995, and above Bradford White's $1,000 to $1,500, all per Fixr, updated January 31, 2025. Every figure is equipment only, not an installed total.

What is the warranty on a Navien tankless water heater?

An uncontrolled, continuously running recirculation pump drops heat exchanger coverage to 5 years. Source: Navien, NPE Warranty Information, accessed August 2026.

Are Navien tankless water heaters Energy Star certified?

Yes. All Navien gas tankless models are Energy Star rated, per Fixr's brand pricing table, updated January 31, 2025. The condensing NPE-A2 and NPE-S2 series reach up to 0.95 and 0.96 UEF respectively, both above the federal minimum of 0.80 to 0.81 UEF under 10 CFR 430.32(d).

What is the difference between Navien's condensing and non-condensing models?

Condensing NPE-A2 and NPE-S2 units vent through PVC or polypropylene and reach up to 0.95 to 0.96 UEF. Non-condensing NHW and NPN series clear the federal 0.80 to 0.81 UEF minimum but vent through metal concentric pipe instead, per Navien's residential page and 10 CFR 430.32(d).
