A Navien tankless gas water heater unit costs $1,075 to $1,535 before installation, per Fixr's brand pricing table, updated January 31, 2025. No dated source publishes a Navien-specific installed total. The closest sourced stand-in is the general gas tankless installed range of $3,293 to $3,859, per Homewyse, dated May 2026, which is not brand-specific.
Hot Water Brief is an independent cost-research site. We are not a contractor and do not perform the work ourselves.
That gap is the story of a tankless install: venting, gas supply upgrades and labor, not the nameplate on the unit. Homewyse's estimate is built on an 8.5 gpm unit at a 35 degree F rise. Navien's own NPE-240A2 is rated at 11.2 gpm at that same rise, so treat the stand-in range as a starting point for a full-size Navien install rather than a ceiling.
| Cost line | Range | Source, dated |
|---|---|---|
| Navien tankless gas unit, equipment only | $1,075 to $1,535 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
| General gas tankless installed total, not Navien-specific | $3,293 to $3,859 | Homewyse, May 2026 |
| National average, all tankless fuels, installed | $2,500 to $4,500, average $2,811 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
| Lower-scope gas tankless installed estimate | $1,400 to $3,500 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
For the full line-item breakdown of that range, see the complete cost guide.

Navien's published gas tankless unit price of $1,075 to $1,535 sits above Rheem's $670 to $1,950 and below the top of Rinnai's $900 to $1,995, with Bradford White priced at $1,000 to $1,500, all per Fixr's brand comparison table, updated January 31, 2025. Every figure here is equipment only, not an installed total.
Those unit prices matter less than they look like they should. Installed totals are driven by venting, gas line sizing and permit costs, all of which apply whether the nameplate says Navien, Rheem or Rinnai. A bid that quotes a much higher installed price for a Navien unit than for a comparable Rheem unit is pricing something other than the equipment difference, since the equipment gap between brands is a few hundred dollars at most.
| Brand | Gas unit price, equipment only | Source, dated |
|---|---|---|
| Navien | $1,075 to $1,535 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
| Rinnai | $900 to $1,995 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
| Rheem | $670 to $1,950 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
| Bradford White | $1,000 to $1,500 | Fixr, January 31, 2025 |
Ask what a quote includes before comparing brand to brand. For that brand's side of the comparison, see the Rinnai install cost page.
No dated source from a manufacturer, cost calculator or standards body publishes an installed total specific to Navien equipment. What is published is a unit price by brand and a general installed range by fuel type. Treat any 'Navien installed for $X' figure that carries no source and no date as unverified.
That is not an oversight. Cost calculators like Homewyse price a job by fuel type, flow rate and temperature rise, since those drive labor hours, not the brand on the case. A gas tankless install needs the same vent path, gas supply check and permit whether the unit is a Navien NPE-240A2 or a competitor's model with a similar flow rating.
If a company quotes an installed price for a specific Navien model, ask for the line items separately: equipment, labor, venting and any gas line work. That breakdown is checkable against the published ranges above. A single bundled number with no breakdown is not.
Navien's condensing models use two heat exchangers instead of one, reach up to 0.95 to 0.96 UEF, and can vent through PVC or polypropylene rather than metal, per Navien's own condensing technology page. All three of those specs change what an installer actually does on the job, not just what the spec sheet says.
The second heat exchanger drives the efficiency gain: it pulls heat from the exhaust gas to preheat incoming cold water, which is also why the exhaust runs cool enough for PVC venting instead of metal. That combustion process also produces condensate with an acidic pH of 3 to 5, per Navien, which some local codes require neutralizing before it reaches a drain.
The federal floor is a useful comparison. Gas fired instantaneous water heaters made before May 6, 2029 must hit a minimum UEF of 0.80 for very small draw and 0.81 for low, medium and high draw, per 10 CFR 430.32(d). Navien's condensing lineup sits above that minimum on every draw pattern.
None of this changes labor pricing on its own. A condensate line, and in some jurisdictions a neutralizer, sit outside the general installed range above, the same as for any condensing unit regardless of brand.
Navien's current condensing lineup splits into two series: NPE-A2, with three models, and NPE-S2, with four, per Navien's residential tankless page. The NPE-A2 series adds ComfortFlow, Navien's built-in recirculation system combining a buffer tank, a pump and controls in one unit, which the flagship NPE-240A2 model pairs with 11.2 gpm at a 35 degree F rise.
The NPE-240A2 spec sheet anchors what the tier buys: rated for 13,300 to 199,900 Btu/h input, a 0.95 UEF, and indoor or outdoor installation with PVC venting runs up to 75 feet, per Navien's product page for that model. Multiple units can also be cascaded on a shared vent, a commercial or larger-household option, not a typical single-bath retrofit.
Below the condensing tier, Navien also sells non-condensing NHW and NPN series, which exceed 0.80 UEF but use metal concentric venting rather than PVC, per Navien's residential page. That venting difference is why a non-condensing swap and a condensing swap are not priced the same.
| Series | Condensing | UEF | Venting | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NPE-A2, 3 models | Yes | up to 0.95 | PVC or polypropylene | Navien residential page |
| NPE-S2, 4 models | Yes | up to 0.96 | PVC or polypropylene | Navien residential page |
| NHW and NPN series | No | above 0.80 | Metal concentric | Navien residential page |
Fit depends on peak simultaneous draw and whether a recirculation loop is wanted, not on price alone. For running costs over time, see the Navien tankless water heater cost guide.
In a single family home with standard or controlled recirculation, Navien's NPE-A series carries 15 years on the heat exchanger, 5 years on parts and 1 year on labor, per Navien's NPE warranty page. Switch to an uncontrolled recirculation loop, meaning a pump that runs continuously rather than on a control, and heat exchanger coverage drops to 5 years.
| Installation type | Heat exchanger | Parts | Labor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single family, standard or controlled recirculation | 15 years | 5 years | 1 year |
| Single family, uncontrolled recirculation | 5 years | 3 years | 1 year |
| Commercial or combi, standard or controlled recirculation | 8 years | 5 years | 1 year |
| Commercial or combi, uncontrolled recirculation | 3 years | 3 years | 1 year |

That distinction is decided on install day: will the recirculation pump run on an aquastat or timer, or continuously. The difference is worth ten years of heat exchanger coverage, and it costs little to specify correctly up front.
Two more terms matter. Navien voids the warranty for a product bought online or through an installer that sourced it from an unauthorized distributor, per the same page. Navien also recommends annual maintenance, covering the inlet water filters, intake air filter, condensate trap, and a flush and descale of the heat exchangers, per its maintenance guidance dated November 26, 2024, the service that protects the heat exchanger's 15-year term.

$1,075 to $1,535 for the gas unit itself, per Fixr's brand pricing table, updated January 31, 2025. That figure is equipment only. Installers price venting, gas supply work and labor separately, which is why the number on a written quote runs well above the unit price alone.
No dated source publishes one. The closest sourced stand-in is the general gas tankless installed range of $3,293 to $3,859, per Homewyse, dated May 2026, which prices an 8.5 gpm unit and is not specific to Navien equipment or its higher-flow models.

Yes. Navien's warranty terms state that a product purchased through the internet, other e-commerce channels, or an installer that obtained it from a distributor not authorized by Navien voids the warranty. Source: Navien, NPE Warranty Information, accessed August 2026.
Up to 0.95 UEF for the NPE-A2 series and up to 0.96 UEF for the NPE-S2 series, per Navien's residential tankless page. Both sit well above the federal minimum of 0.80 to 0.81 UEF for gas-fired instantaneous water heaters made before May 6, 2029, per 10 CFR 430.32(d).
