50 Gallon Gas Water Heater Replacement Cost

How Much Does a 50 Gallon Gas Water Heater Replacement Cost

A 50 gallon gas water heater replacement costs $900 to $2,500 installed nationally, typical around $1,800, per Fixr data updated January 26, 2026. At this capacity venting type is the main swing inside that range: a power vent model draws a higher BTU input for faster recovery than a standard atmospheric model, and that step shows up on the invoice.

This page covers only the overlap of those two facts: a tank sized at 50 gallons that also burns gas. For the full breakdown across every capacity in both fuels, see 50 gallon water heater replacement cost. For the full breakdown across every gas tank size and venting scenario, see gas water heater replacement cost. For every capacity and fuel type in one place, start at the complete cost guide.

Labor, venting and any gas line work sit on top of the equipment price, not folded into one flat number, which is why two bids on the same 50 gallon gas tank can land far apart before either company marks anything up.

What Btu Input Does a 50 Gallon Gas Water Heater Need

BTU input decides how fast a tank reheats, and at 50 gallons the standard atmospheric burner runs 40,000 BTU while a power vent model steps up to 50,000 BTU, per A.O. Smith's published specifications. That extra input lifts the first hour rating from 81 gallons to 97 gallons, the number that predicts peak hour hot water.

State Water Heaters, a separate manufacturer, publishes the same pattern on its own atmospheric model: 40,000 BTU input, an 81 gallon first hour rating and a 41 gallon per hour recovery rate. Its power vent counterpart from A.O. Smith recovers at 55.9 gallons per hour, because the blower lets the burner run at a higher input without depending on a chimney's natural draft.

This is the piece a generic 50 gallon page or a generic gas page will not show: the two venting types are not the same appliance wearing a different jacket, they carry a different BTU rating and a different first hour rating. For how occupant count decides whether 50 gallons and its first hour rating are enough in the first place, see 50 gallon water heater replacement cost.

How Much More Does Power Vent Cost Than Atmospheric at 50 Gallons

Switching from atmospheric to power vent on a 50 gallon gas tank is a venting change, not a different size, and Fixr prices that change separately from the tank: about $500 for a straight direct vent swap, closer to $1,100 for power vent, plus $300 to $1,000 more if a dedicated electrical connection has to be added, per Fixr data updated January 2026.

The venting choice at 50 gallons carries more weight than the exhaust path alone, because it usually travels with the BTU step up shown above: an atmospheric 50 gallon unit tops out at 40,000 BTU, while power vent opens the door to 50,000 BTU and the higher first hour rating that follows. A gas line sized for a 40,000 BTU atmospheric burner is not automatically adequate for a 50,000 BTU power vent unit; sizing the supply to the appliance's Btu rating, not the old unit's, is licensed work.

Combustion air and gas line sizing rules apply the same way regardless of tank size. The full requirements, including the code's room volume test, are covered in gas water heater replacement cost.

Does a 50 Gallon Gas Water Heater Meet the Federal Efficiency Minimum

Yes, for both venting types, and with room to spare. Federal rule requires a gas storage tank from 20 to 55 gallons on the medium draw pattern to clear 0.6483 minus 0.0017 times its rated volume, about 0.56 at 50 gallons, under 10 CFR 430.32(d). The atmospheric model above tests at up to 0.62, the power vent model at 0.72.

A tighter standard applies to units manufactured on or after May 6, 2029: 0.7046 minus 0.0017 times rated volume, about 0.62 at 50 gallons, under the same regulation. That is almost exactly where today's atmospheric model already sits, while today's power vent model clears both the current and the 2029 floor with room left over.

The same rule applies to every gas tank size, not just 50 gallons, and the same rule sets a separate, much higher bar for electric tanks above 55 gallons. Both are covered in full in gas water heater replacement cost and 50 gallon water heater replacement cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 50 gallon gas water heater replacement cost?

$900 to $2,500 installed nationally, typical around $1,800, per Fixr data updated January 26, 2026. Venting type is the main reason two bids differ: a power vent model needs a higher BTU input and its own electrical connection, an atmospheric model does not.

How much does a 50 gal gas water heater replacement cost with power venting added?

The tank still falls inside the same $900 to $2,500 range, but power venting itself adds roughly $1,100 for the vent plus $300 to $1,000 for a dedicated electrical connection, on top of whatever the atmospheric version alone would have cost. Source: Fixr, data updated January 2026.

What BTU input should a 50 gallon gas water heater have?

Manufacturer specifications show 40,000 BTU on a standard atmospheric 50 gallon model and 50,000 BTU on a power vent 50 gallon model. The higher input on the power vent model lifts its first hour rating from 81 gallons to 97 gallons. Source: A.O. Smith product specifications, accessed August 2026.

Does a 50 gallon gas water heater need a bigger gas line than a 40 gallon one?

Not automatically, but it can. Gas line sizing follows the appliance's Btu rating, not the tank size, so a 50,000 BTU power vent unit can call for more supply than a 40,000 BTU atmospheric unit even at the same 50 gallon capacity. Sizing the line is licensed work.

Does a 50 gallon gas water heater meet the federal minimum efficiency standard?

Yes. Under 10 CFR 430.32(d), a 50 gallon gas storage tank on the medium draw pattern must clear about 0.56 uniform energy factor. Atmospheric 50 gallon models test up to 0.62 and power vent models up to 0.72, both above the floor.

Is 50 gallons the right size for a gas water heater?

That depends on occupant count, not fuel type. See 50 gallon water heater replacement cost for the full occupancy chart this page does not repeat.
