Navien Tankless Water Heater Repair: What the Error Codes Mean

What Do Navien Tankless Error Codes Mean

A Navien tankless error code names which internal safety check failed, not that the unit needs replacing. The current NPE-A2 and NPE-S2 series display one of 32 distinct codes, covering ignition, flame loss, overheating, air pressure, gas type and internal sensor faults, per Navien's NPE-2 User's Information Manual. Most start with a homeowner-checkable cause.

Hot Water Brief is an independent cost-research site. We are not a contractor and do not perform the work ourselves.

Navien's residential lineup is tankless, apart from a separate heat pump water heater series, per Navien's residential water heaters page, accessed August 2026. There is no residential storage tank model to tell apart from a tankless one, which is why the number on the display, not the product type, is the useful starting point.

The 32 codes group into practical families: ignition and flame (E003, E004, E012), heat exchanger and exhaust temperature (E016, E030, E031), airflow and venting (E109, E110, E762), a gas type mismatch found at installation (E773, E788), and a longer list of internal sensor, valve and control board faults, the E4xx, E5xx, E6xx and E7xx codes, that the manual routes straight to Technical Support with no homeowner step listed.

How Do I Reset a Navien Tankless Water Heater

Press the Back button on the front panel to reset an NPE-A2 or NPE-S2 unit after an error code appears, per Navien's NPE-2 manual. A reset clears minor faults so the unit can restart. If the same code returns right after, the manual's next step is troubleshooting the code itself or a call to Technical Support.

That single-button reset is the extent of what the manual treats as a homeowner fix on its own. Everything past it, cleaning a filter, checking a valve position, or opening the case, is either a listed self-diagnostic step tied to a specific code or a job the manual routes to a technician. The individual codes below explain which is which.

What Does Error Code E003 or E004 Mean

E003 means the burner did not light when the unit called for ignition. E004 means the control board detected a flame signal that should not be there. Navien's manual lists the E003 remedy as confirming the main gas supply valve is open, and the E004 remedy as confirming the electrical cord is properly grounded.

Both sit in the ignition family, but they report opposite problems: E003 is no result where one was expected, E004 is a result that should not exist. Checking that a manual shutoff valve near the unit, or the main gas valve at the meter, has not been bumped closed is the one step the manual assigns to a homeowner for E003. E004 points at grounding, an electrical fix rather than a valve, and belongs with a licensed technician.

What Does Error Code E012 Mean

E012 means the burner lit, then lost its flame mid draw. Navien's manual gives two remedies: clean the intake air filter, described on page 14 of the manual, and confirm the electrical cord is properly grounded, the same check listed for E004. Both are worth ruling out, since the manual lists only these two remedies for this code.

The Department of Energy's Building America Solution Center recommends cleaning a tankless unit's water and air filters every 6 to 12 months for best efficiency and performance, and notes that a clogged air filter will stop the unit from working until it is cleaned. On a unit that has not been serviced in that window, the intake air filter is worth checking before anything else on this code.

What Does Error Code E016 or E030 Mean

E016 means the heat exchanger itself is overheating. E030 means exhaust gas temperature passed 149 degrees F (65 degrees C) and the unit shut itself down. Navien's manual lists the same two remedies for both codes: clean the cold water inlet filter, and flush the heat exchanger.

Both faults share a root cause: something is restricting water flow through the exchanger or has built up inside it, so it runs hotter than the unit is designed to tolerate. Flushing the exchanger is a maintenance procedure Navien documents on page 12 of the manual, not a part swap, which is why it appears as the fix for two different-sounding codes. A cold water inlet filter clogged with sediment is the simpler of the two checks and the one to rule out before scheduling a full descale.

What Does Error Code E110 Mean

E110 means the unit detected abnormal air pressure, usually tied to restricted intake or exhaust airflow. Navien's manual gives two remedies: confirm the exhaust pipe is free of obstructions, and clean the intake air filter, the same filter check used for E012.

A related but separate code, E762, means the vent pipe itself is not properly inserted, a fault the manual routes straight to Technical Support rather than listing a homeowner check. Anything about venting on a gas appliance is a safety matter beyond the code itself. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a yearly professional inspection of vents serving gas water heaters, checking for blockage by debris and for loose or disconnected joints, since a compromised flue sends combustion products into the house instead of outside it.

What Does Error Code E773 or E788 Mean

E773 means the unit detected it is set up for the wrong gas type. E788 means the gas type set on the front panel does not match the DIP switch setting inside the unit. Navien's manual routes E773 straight to Technical Support, while E788's listed remedy is checking that the supplied gas matches both settings.

Both are installation-time faults rather than wear faults. Natural gas and propane units are configured differently at setup, and a unit installed on the wrong fuel, or converted without changing the internal setting, throws one of these two codes rather than quietly running poorly. That makes either code a reason to have the original installation checked, not just the unit itself.

What Should I Check Before Calling for Repair

Three checks are safe for a homeowner to make: confirm the main gas supply valve is open, confirm the cold water inlet filter is clean, and confirm the intake air filter is clean. Navien's manual lists these as the self-diagnostic steps behind several of the codes above. Anything past them, opening the case or working on the gas train, is not a homeowner step.

The Building America Solution Center's 6 to 12 month filter cleaning interval is a useful check on its own: a unit that has gone longer than that without a filter clean is a reasonable first suspect on E012, E016, E030 or E110.

When checks do not clear the code, Navien's manual lists five pieces of information to have ready for a call to Technical Support or an installer:

  • Model number
  • Serial number
  • Date purchased
  • Installation location and type
  • Error code shown on the display

How Much Does Navien Tankless Repair Cost

No dated source publishes a Navien-specific repair cost. The closest sourced stand-in is Fixr's tankless water heater repair guide, which puts the national average at $375 with a typical range of $100 to $650, not specific to any one brand, published 31 January 2025.

Problem typeTypical repair rangeSource, dated
Ignition failure, the E003 or E004 family$100 to $300Fixr, 31 January 2025
Clog or scaling, the E016 or E030 family$150 to $450Fixr, 31 January 2025
Unit shuts off$50 to $500Fixr, 31 January 2025
National average, all tankless brands$375, typical range $100 to $650Fixr, 31 January 2025

These ranges price a tankless repair by problem type across brands, not by manufacturer, and local labor rates move the number in either direction. For Navien's own unit and installed cost figures, see the Navien tankless water heater cost guide and the Navien installation cost guide.

When Does a Navien Error Code Need a Licensed Technician

Any code the manual routes to Technical Support rather than to a homeowner check, and anything involving the gas line, the burner assembly or venting, needs a licensed technician. Navien's manual lists at least twenty of its 32 codes as internal sensor, control board or valve faults with no homeowner step listed at all.

A gas smell anywhere near the unit is a separate and more urgent matter than any code on the display. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's guidance is to leave the area on foot, not to look for the source, not to operate any valves, and to call 911 from a safe location before notifying the utility.

For Navien's warranty terms, its authorized servicer network and how a claim gets opened, see the Navien water heater repair guide. For symptoms across both tank and tankless units, the water heater problems guide sorts by what you are seeing rather than by brand.

Frequently asked questions

What does error code E003 mean on a Navien tankless water heater?

Ignition failure: the burner did not light. Navien's NPE-2 manual lists the remedy as confirming the main gas supply valve is open. If the valve is open and the code returns after a reset, the fault is past the homeowner-checkable stage and belongs with a licensed technician.

How do I reset a Navien tankless water heater?

Press the Back button on the front panel. Navien's manual describes this as the standard reset for an error code on the NPE-A2 or NPE-S2 series. If the same code returns after one reset, the next step is troubleshooting that code or contacting Technical Support, not resetting repeatedly.

What does error code E030 mean on a Navien unit?

Exhaust overheating: the flue temperature passed 149 degrees F (65 degrees C) and the unit shut itself down. Navien's manual lists two remedies: clean the cold water inlet filter, and flush the heat exchanger, the same steps listed for the related E016 code.

Can I fix a Navien tankless error code myself?

For a short list, yes: cleaning the cold water inlet filter or the intake air filter, or confirming the gas supply valve is open, are the self-diagnostic steps listed for E012, E016, E030 and E110. Most of the remaining 32 codes list only one remedy: contact Technical Support.

How much does it cost to repair a Navien tankless water heater?

No dated source publishes a Navien-specific figure. The closest stand-in is Fixr's tankless repair guide, published 31 January 2025, giving a national average of $375 across brands, typical range $100 to $650. Ignition failure repairs run $100 to $300, and clog or scaling repairs run $150 to $450.

What information should I have ready before calling for Navien tankless repair?

Navien's manual lists five items: model number, serial number, date purchased, installation location and type, and the error code shown on the display. Having those ready before the call is the manual's own recommendation for contacting Technical Support.
